Advent Sermon Series: shine bright

"Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights …" (Philippians 2:15)

When the Apostle Paul writes the letter to the believers living in the city of Philippi, he does so while in prison or under house arrest, perhaps in the city of Rome. With his freedom restricted, you would think that Paul would have a negative view of his situation and the people who are opposing him in the world. In this letter, Paul not only communicates his heartfelt love for the Philippian believers, but also encourages them to shine like bright lights in a world that can seem very dark and adversarial.

In this four week Advent sermon series, we will explore a few passages from Paul’s letter to the Philippians and be encouraged to shine bright in the world and reflect God's love through our compassionate words and actions .

Our spiritual practice this Advent will be Lectio Divina (divine reading). You will have the opportunity to read and pray through the entire book of Philippians in December.

Sunday, December 1 - Shine bright when the world is not as it should be. (Philippians 1:12-19)

Sunday, December 8 - Shine bright by being considerate of others. (Philippians 2:1-11)

Sunday, December 15 - Shine Bright by settling disagreements. (Philippians 4:2-9)

Sunday, December 22 - Shine bright by living with contentment. (Philippians 4:10-20)

Advent Lectio Divina Spiritual Practice

Lectio Divina is a contmplative way to read short passages of sacred text. With the first reading, listen with your heart's ear for a phrase or word that stands out for you. During the second reading, reflect on what touches you, perhaps speaking that response aloud or writing in a journal. After reading the passage a third time, respond with a prayer or expression of what you have experienced and what it calls you to do. Finally, rest in silence after a fourth reading.
