A Prayer Before Gift Opening
Lord God, you are the one who blesses us with all good things. As we prepare to open these gifts, help us to cherish this time we spend together. We know that giving gifts is one way we show our love for each other. Let these gifts we share also remind us of the greatest gift of love you have given to us, your son Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.
A Prayer After Gift Opening
Lord Jesus, we thank you for the privilege of giving and receiving these gifts. We know you are here with us in our laughter, joy and feelings of thankfulness. Help us take the love and spirit of giving we have experienced in this time into our daily lives. May the Holy Spirit guide our thoughts, words, and actions as we seek to live generously. Amen.
Prayer Before Christmas Meal
Invite someone to read the Christmas Story:
“At that time the Roman emperor decreed that a census should be taken throughout the Roman Empire. All returned to their own ancestral towns to register for this census. And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David’s ancient home. He traveled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee. He took with him Mary, his fiancée, who was now obviously pregnant. And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. She gave birth to her first child, a son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them.” (Luke 2:1,3-7)
Prayer Option #1
Someone may then pray:
Be near us, Lord Jesus, we ask you to stay, close by us forever and love us, we pray. Dear Jesus, we are thankful for this this moment, this meal, and these people. As we celebrate your birth, we ask your blessing upon this food and drink and our time together. We also ask you to bless and keep those we love who are not here today or who have passed away. We give you our thanks and praise, Jesus our light and savior. Amen.
Prayer Option #2
Someone may then pray:
Lord God, you give us so many gifts, such as food, home, clothing, work, school, family, friends, and times for celebrating. We thank you for the countless ways you bless us each day. We are also grateful for those who are here at this table with us, but we also remember those we love who are not here today or who have passed away. Bless this food, which is a gift from your gracious hand. We give you our thanks and praise as we celebrate the birth of your son Jesus this Christmastime. Amen.
